Applicants are invited for a Doctoral Researcher position at the University Hamburg in the project “Carbon dynamics and climate futures in drylands of Southern Africa” as part of the Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society” (CLICCS). Doctoral candidates are members of the structured doctoral program of the School of Integrated Climate and Earth System Sciences (SICSS), which provides high-quality, interdisciplinary, and internationally oriented training.

Your responsibilities include:

• investigate carbon budgets and dynamics in dryland soil in Southern Africa
• conducting a field survey on C-pools of biocrusts in Southern Africa
• design and conduct soil incubation experiments with biocrusts on carbon turnover and water availability using lipidbiomarker and stable isotope approaches

Title:
ComPASS - Compaction-driven mechanisms of Plant Adaptations and Signalling: the role of ethylene in root responses

Research area and project description:
The overarching objective of the project is to provide a fundamental understanding of how physical processes occurring in the vicinity of root tips influence root growth via ethylene signalling. The project entails laboratory experiments during which plants/genotypes of different ethylene sensitivity will be grown under controlled conditions on different soils. The soils will be chosen in order to cover a range of textures and bulk densities (compaction treatments). After the growth period, pots will be scanned with X-ray CT to characterize root traits and root-soil physical interactions (root-soil contact, rhizosphere structure) non-destructively in 3D. RNA sequencing will be performed on root tip tissues in order to identify expressed genes and signalling pathways that are affected as a response of changes in soil properties. This project is a collaboration between Aarhus University, the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Halle (Germany) and the University of Nottingham (UK). Place of employment is in the Department of Agroecology of AU. The PhD student will be expected to participate in research stays in at least one of these two collaborating institutions.

Das Institut für Waldökosysteme des Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Instituts, Bundesforschungsinstitut für Ländliche Räume, Wald und Fischerei am Standort Eberswalde, sucht zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt - befristet für 36 Monate - eine*n wissenschaftliche*n Mitarbeiter*in / Post-Doc zum Thema Wasserhaushalt von Waldökosystemen (w/m/d) in Vollzeit (zzt. 39 Stunden/Woche) zur Mitarbeit im Arbeitsbereich Bodenschutz und Waldzustand.

Wälder sollen naturnah sein und produktiv. Ihre Bewirtschaftung soll nutzbringend sein und umweltgerecht. Obendrein sollen Wälder gerüstet sein für den Klimawandel. In diesem Spannungsfeld sucht das Thünen-Institut für Waldökosysteme nach Lösungen für die Wälder und deren Bewirtschaftung. Hierzu besteht ein umfassendes nationales und internationales wissenschaftliches Netzwerk zu verschiedenen Themen im Bereich Waldökologie, Waldinventuren, Umweltmonitoring, Treibhausgasberichterstattung und Wildtierökologie. Zurzeit befindet sich die dritte Bodenzustandserhebung im Wald in der Auswertungsphase. Für die umfassende Analyse des Wasserhaushaltes suchen wir Unterstützung.

Die Stelle dient der eigenen wissenschaftlichen Qualifizierung im Rahmen der Post-Doc-Phase. Die Befristung des Arbeitsverhältnisses erfolgt innerhalb der Höchstbefristungsdauer nach § 2 Abs. 1 Satz 2 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

Full Professor (W3) of Plant-Soil Interactions
at the Institute of Crop Science to be filled by 1 April 2028.
The position holder is expected to address practice-oriented agricultural topics in plant nutrition, with a particular focus on plant and soil health. Innovative fertilization strategies and interactions at the root–soil interface may constitute key areas of research. The candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of agricultural systems and an orientation toward the principles of sustainability.
They should be capable of conducting both greenhouse experiments and field trials, and of actively contributing to interdisciplinary research consortia. We would like for the successful candidate to participate in the “TERRA: Terrestrial geo-biosphere interactions in a changing world” Cluster of Excellence.
In teaching, the position will cover practice-oriented plant nutrition and crop production related to fertilization. The future position holder must be able to offer courses in both German and English. For international applications, the successful candidate is expected to acquire German language skills within a reasonable period of time.

You’re interested in digging deeper into how the land-use intensity of grassland ecosystems influences the belowground biodiversity and the storage and the turnover of nitrogen in soils? Then this exciting PhD opportunity is for you!

The project is part of the Biodiversity Exploratories (www.biodiversity-exploratories.de/en/), an Infrastructure Priority Programme (SPP 1374) funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG; German Research Foundation). Within the Biodiversity Exploratories, scientists from different disciplines from all over Germany and Europe join forces to address crucial questions of biodiversity and how these are interrelated with ecosystem change. This PhD project is collaboratively supervised by Dr. Stefanie Schulz from the Research Unit Comparative Microbiome Analysis (Helmholtz Munich), Prof. Dr. Michael Schloter (Environmental Microbiology, Technical University of Munich and Helmholtz Munich), and Dr. Steffen Schweizer from the Chair of Soil Science (Technical University of Munich). The exciting collaborative experimental approach also involves close cooperation with PD Dr. Michael Dannenmann (Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research Atmospheric Environmental Research of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). By bringing together complementary expertise on physicochemical organic matter storage mechanisms and the characterization of the soil microbiome, we aim to jointly advance the process-based understanding of N turnover.

Open PhD Position: Electrical Modelling of the Soil-Root System

Applications are invited for a Doctoral Researcher position at University of Bonn in the project „Non-invasive electrical sensing of root structural-functional phenes” as part of the DFG funded Cluster of Excellence “PhenoRob: Robotics and Phenotyping for Sustainable Crop Production” (http://www.phenorob.de). The project aims at the development of an electrical structural-functional soil-root model for the simulation of electrical impedance signatures measured in spectral electrical impedance tomography (sEIT) on soil-root systems.

• Model implementation on HPC system
• Simulation of soil-root sEIT responses and identification of root structural-functional phenes
