Commissions

To represent the different branches of Soil Science the following commissions are established:

The commissions are the backbone of the scientific activities of the German Soil Science Society in the different branches of Soil Science. They should foster the specific research of the branches through the joint research of the members. All members of the German Soil Science Society (DBG) may join each commission by a letter of intention to the chairman of the commission or by their active participation in commission events.

Soil Physics and Soil Hydrology

Typical topics of interest for this commission are the movement of water and gas in the ground, the transport of dissolved and particulate matter between the soil surface and the groundwater, the exchange of energy, water and gases between soil and atmosphere, and the measurement and characterization of hydraulic, thermal, mechanical and electromagnetic properties of soils across a variety of scales. We see ourselves as "homeland" of all people within the DBG, who are interested in this topic.

The Commission IV of the German Soil Science Society (DBG) investigates the soil as a site for agricultural, horticultural and silvicultural production. Specific focus is put on

To address these interdisciplinary issues, a close cooperation exists with other commissions of the DBG and with the German Society for Plant Nutrition (DGP).

Soil Protection and Soil Technology

Soil protection and contaminated sites

Soils are an indispensable livelihood for humans, animals and plants. They supply food and raw materials, store and filter water and can reduce pollutants. They offer land for colonization, for traffic and leisure. And last but not least, they are an archive of natural and cultural history. However, the floors can not fulfill all of these functions simultaneously. In addition, some of these functions are threatened by contamination, erosion, humus decline and compaction. Accumulated damage can hardly be remedied in the short term, because fertile soils are the result of long physical, chemical and biological processes: it takes 200 to 300 years to regenerate one centimeter.

There is concern that the use of land for settlements and transport will further reduce the other functions. Every second, almost 11 square meters of land in Germany are used for residential and transport purposes. Almost half of it is sealed. However, sealing is increasingly losing natural soil functions such as water permeability or storage capacity, soil fertility and habitat for organisms.

Hazards to soils may stem from old industrial and commercial sites where environmentally hazardous materials have been used, as well as from land where waste has been handled or stored. If the soil is so polluted that it leads to risks to human health or the environment, these old deposits and old sites are called contaminated sites. In addition to the legacies of industrial development, there are also legacies through military use of land and through the production of military equipment.

Soil Mineralogy

Our goals: Commission VII is one of eight commissions of the Deutsche Bodenkundliche Gesellschaft (German Soil Science Society) and deals with mineralogy and micromorphology of soil. Our objective is to foster quality in science, cooperation in research and scientific communication in soil mineralogy, as well as to inspire students and young scientists with interest in our field of research. For this purpose the members of commission VII are periodically organizing conferences and workshops. These meetings are often held in collaboration with other commissions or scientific associations and welcome participants from science, government, and industry. Close collaborations exist with groups working on inorganic or organic soil chemistry, soil physics and soil pollution/protection.

Soil in Education and Society

Welcome to the Homepage of the Commission VIII "Soil in Education and Society"

The Commission is aimed at making soil, as a central environmental medium, accessible to the general public.

At this purpose, the Commission adresses multipliers in schooling as well as in continuing education. Furthermore, the Commission gets involved in developing the general awareness for soil and soil protection.

The Commission regularly offers lectures and continuing education events, which are open to public. In addition, the Commission brings in touch regional consultants for teaching staff.
